Remarks by Foreign Ministry Spokesman Kong Quan on the US official's comment on Taiwan issue

Q:  It is reported that on April 21, the House of Representative Committee on International Relations of the United States held a hearing titled The Taiwan Relations Act: the Next Twenty-Five Years. Officials with the US State Department and Department of Defense all stated in the hearing that the US would continue to sell defensive weapons to Taiwan in accordance with the Taiwan Relations Act and if the mainland used force against Taiwan, the US would inevitably get itself involved. What's your comment on that?

A:  The Chinese Government has been firmly opposed to the enactment of the so-called Taiwan Relations Act from the very beginning and US arms sales to Taiwan based on such act, We are seriously concerned about and dissatisfied with the US congressional hearing and the remarks made by US officials. We have lodged solemn representations with the US side.

Taiwan is part of China and no one can impede the process of the realization of China's reunification. US leaders have time and again reiterated the adherence to one-China policy, observation of the three Sino-US joint communiqués and opposition to "Taiwan independence".

We hope the United States will honor words with deeds, stop selling advanced weapons to Taiwan and interfering in China's internal affairs, send no wrong signal to "Taiwan independence" forces, and maintain the peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits and the common interests of China and the United States with concrete actions.
